Reports that there has been whaling occurring in Australian waters are extremely disturbing.
The Government must immediately confirm whether this has been the case.
Australians will be extremely alarmed and disappointed if the reports are correct.
While we do not want to see whaling occurring, we also do not want any loss of life in a confrontation between the protestors and the whaling fleet.
We would encourage all parties to abide by the law and not to endanger lives in the very treacherous Southern Ocean.
It is for this reason that the Coalition wrote to the Government three times, warning and urging them to dispatch a Customs vessel to the region to act as a cop on the beat during this whaling season.
By having a presence, the Government could have sent a clear message that whaling is not supported by the Australian people.
It would also enable independent verification of the actions of both parties and encourage everyone to act within the law.
