The Tasmanian Greenshave urged Attorney-General Brian Wightman to rethink his intention to stall the introduction of the promised Tasmanian Human Rights Charter.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said a financial value cannot be placed on human rights, and that recent reports that this important progressive social reform is to be stalled on the basis of economic constraints are very disappointing.
“Human rights are especially important for vulnerable people and we should legislate to enshrine them,” Mr McKim said.
“Human rights are not a luxury to be looked after only in good economic times. The Greens believe it is especially in tough economic times that we must not lose sight of looking after the vulnerable in our community.”
“The Attorney-General needs to prioritise sitting down with the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner to work out an implementation plan and timeframe by which the promised Human Rights Charter is to be delivered.”
“The Greens have long advocated a Tasmanian Charter of Rights, and we will continue to push for it’s implementation, as recommended by the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute,” Mr McKim said.
