Australia on Trial 4

ABC Online: Councillor guilty of possessing child exploitation material: A Tasmanian alderman has been convicted on one count of possessing child exploitation material and had another count dismissed. David Traynor, 54, of Cremorne was given a two year good behaviour bond for possessing a sexually explicit story involving young girls that was written in the 1880s. Magistrate Michael Hill found it fell into the lower spectrum of child exploitation offences. A second charge of possessing a pornographic cartoon depicting a 14 year old girl engaged in sexual acts was dismissed.

I had to check the date. Is it April 1st? No, that’s a month away. It would be a very sick joke if it was, especially published on the ABC.

OK, possessing an historic work of fiction written in the 1880s gets a man a criminal conviction. What have we become?

Is it a criminal offence to now own a copy of Lolita? If not, why not?

Is it a criminal offence to own a copy of the Bible? Yes, the Bible, which condones incest as a divine directive (Judges 11:34), the sexual abuse of children (Isaiah 13:18), “ripping up” pregnant women (Hosea 13:16) and killing children (Psalm 137:9).

If we keep marching down this highway into hell, how soon before Big Brother looks into our heads and decides that we are evil and must be condemned?

The can is open, the worms are out and like Pandora’s box, what have we released?
