Labor Must Honour Election Commitment in Budget
The Tasmanian Greens today have called on the State Labor government to guarantee financial support in the forthcoming Budget for Tasmania’s university radio station Edge Radio, which is considering cutting staff hours and potentially folding due to funding shortages.
Greens Arts spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said that Edge radio provided an invaluable learning and training experience for many young Tasmanians as well as provided an independent and creative voice for the community.
“This innovative radio station already operates on a shoe-string budget of $200, 000 each year and on that amount manages to support three staff, provide a unique skill building and learning experience for many students and young people, as well as delivering an independent voice for its listeners,” Ms O’Connor said.
“The Greens are calling on Labor to honour its election commitment to provide funding to Edge Radio, and the first opportunity for that will be in the forthcoming state budget, where we will expect to see the promised $200, 000 over four years.”
“Community radio is a fantastic resource and medium, and one which we must all pull together to support,” Ms O’Connor said.
