When days are dark, people will turn to faith for comfort. It has ever been so. This does not change the war or how it is fought. That has also ever been so. It is not religions that murder and wage war. This is political. War is politics by a more bloody means. Religions get used as an arm of the state. It is politics that is driving the state. This is possible because religion is a form of politics, so the state and religion are frequently arm in arm, as with warrior Popes and the kings of England being the head of the Church of England. Usually, religions shape themselves to the needs of the state, as happened when Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire. They nailed down a creed that was excellent for controlling the flock and that has hardly changed since. Kim Peart

I see plenty of mesmerised behaviour in the attitudes of rank-and-file climate-change alarmists for whom the world is really going to hell in a handbasket if we don’t act drastically and immediately. Never mind that similar projections in the past based across a wide range of eco-scares have proven systematically wide of the mark. Never mind that the ecological side of projections of disastrous consequences (at least) is riddled with pessimistic assumptions that frequently don’t stack up. Dr Kevin Bonham
