Are the Waiting Lists Going Down, Minister?

The Tasmanian Greens today challenged Labor to reveal the actual number of homes, either acquired, or constructed, by the government for the financial year 2008-2009 for those Tasmanians who are on the Housing Tasmania waiting lists.
Greens Housing spokesperson Tim Morris MP said that the government has failed to meet its targets for new homes to be made available, and has also failed to reduce the number of people languishing on the housing waiting lists.
“The government failed to answer specific questions about the number of houses either built or bought in the last financial year, and failed to clarify whether there has been any impact on the Housing Tasmania waiting lists despite the recent good news announcements made by the Minister,” Mr Morris said.
“Back on the 26th of May Minister Thorp promised to construct 61 new homes under the national stimulus package stage1, the purchase of a further 15 to be finalised in July and August, an additional 50 ‘Quick Build’ homes, and that 2000 affordable homes would be provided in five years.”
“The Housing Tasmania’s website states that 261 units would be provided by the end of September 2009 by Paramount, but yet today we could not get confirmation that they had all been delivered or that they all have tenants in them.”
“For all the recent good news stories about the few ‘keys in locks’, there was a marked lack of detail as to whether the housing targets are being met, and more crucially, whether the waiting lists are going down,” Mr Morris said.
