This is a quote from Nala Mansell-McKenna that appeared in “The Examiner” on 31 August:
“We have recognised that every time we, as the people, have either camped out at the site or taken over the area of land we have been successful in having that land returned.”
What ever happened to democracy and responsible government in this state? All that the”aborigines” need to do to claim any land they want is to simply occupy it, confident that the gutless government will ignore the interests of the majority of the population, hand the land over, and everyone lacking an Aborigine in their ancestry is locked out.
The present dispute is about the Bay of Fires, which made it to the most wanted list of the people who became “aborigines” in the mid 1970s, and was not even on their list until the site obtained worldwide recognition. For example, Trudy Maluga does not include the site in her list of demands that appeared in “The Examiner” of 16/3/2002.
A couple of years ago I discussed the threat to democracy that this group is posing with a member of parliament, and found that he was completely aware of the problems that I saw, and agreed with my point of view. Asked why he didn’t act, he said that there was nothing that could be done, because if you opposed them, all that happened was that you would be branded a racist.
Goodbye responsible government, ultimately, goodbye democracy in this state!
