REBECCA HUBBARD
Ocean Planet touring Tasmania to explore the future of our oceans
Ocean Planet is a new ocean conservation organisation, which has received funding from the Australian government to discuss the roles of marine national parks and to speak with Tasmanians about their vision for the future of Tasmania’s marine environment. During September, Ocean Planet will be conducting a series of presentations and discussions in towns right across the state.
‘This is an exciting step towards ocean sustainability,’ Coordinator Rebecca Hubbard said. ‘The future of Tasmanian’s oceans is in our hands and we need to share our experiences and information. From Strahan to Swansea, we really want everyone to come along and tell us what they know.’
Ocean Planet will be meeting with people in coastal and inland communities in the south, north-east and north-west of the state. This is Tasmanian’s chance to tell their stories about the ocean they live or work with — how it is changing, and what their hopes are for the future of our fisheries, lifestyle and marine life. The tour includes a dynamic programme of movie screenings, field trips and discussions.
‘We are anticipating attendance by a diverse selection of community members, so we are expecting some really lively discussion!’ Ms Hubbard said.
The first meeting of the tour will take place on Thursday, September 3 in the Life Sciences Seminar Room 105 at the Sandy Bay campus, University of Tasmania. The presentation starts at 6.00 pm. All members of the recreational and commercial fishing community, scientists, councillors and community groups are encouraged to attend. The tour will than head down the Channel and to the Tasman Peninsula before heading up the east coast.
