HELEN BURNET, A letter to the Mercury
The latest EMRS poll on the upcoming state election has sparked plenty of interest, recorded in these pages over the last few days.
I was pleased to read your refreshing editorial which is welcoming a possible power-sharing government for Tasmanians.
On the same day, it was no surprise to read the article featuring Labor power-broker Michael Field, with his usual rhetoric of doom. Predictably he is putting a dampener on the idea, afraid that absolute power might just be slipping through his fingers.
Tasmanians have had enough of the arrogance that pervades the current Labor government, and want to be represented by a government consisting of people who display competence and accountability. The Greens are part of this equation.
As an alderman on Hobart City Council, I know first-hand that there is more strength in working with all around the table rather than not. I do not pretend that all is perfectly harmonious at Town Hall, but even though there is heated debate on contentious topics such as wind turbines and some social inclusion issues, the majority of decisions are reached collaboratively.
I believe that Tasmanians are not only ready for a government made up of the best representatives in a power-sharing model, but that we also expect it.
