Obama and the G8’s 80% emission reduction target shows just how superficial and non-committal Rudd’s 5% aspirations are. However, reaching the set target by 2050 is almost as superficial. It needs to happen now, well before 2020. The only obstacles in Australia to reaching real targets are the forest industries, the fossil fuel energy industries and the CFMEU who dictate to Labor Governments throughout Australia. The cheapest, quickest and most effective remedy to the emissions problem would be to immediately ban all further logging of State and National Forests, not just old growth either. They must be forced to use their vast plantation forests only.
