Federal Member for Bass recently met with the Launceston Chamber of Commerce, to discuss a bid for Launceston to house the Qantas Flight Academy.

Ross Hart, Member for Bass said “I strongly support the bid. Launceston Airport has many advantages in its bid over many other regional centres around Australia”.

Qantas has stated that it requires a regional centre with an airfield that has access to uncongested airspace and the infrastructure to support and accommodate up to 100 students in the first year of operation, with the potential to grow up to 500 students a year by training pilots for other airlines.

Mr Hart said “Launceston Airport’s close proximity to the University of Tasmania and its size and its facilities make it an ideal location for a college.

“Launceston’s Australian Maritime College is just one example of why Launceston is an ideal location for Qantas to train up to 500 pilots a year here.

“Our ability to house one of the southern hemisphere’s pre-eminent maritime training institutions should be a big tick for Qantas in deliberating on its decision” Mr Hart said.
