General ticket sales to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s 2018 Season are on sale from Wednesday 13 December which means you can now buy tickets to some of classical music’s most electrifying and accessible works, performed by the TSO in 2018.
These include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5, Emperor, Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Other popular favourites include Grieg’s Peer Gynt and the Fauré Requiem. Concerts from contemporary artists Eskimo Joe, Katie Noonan with Michael Leunig, performances by Greta Bradman in Hobart and Launceston, Romeo et Juliette - an Opera in Concert – and the beloved Handel’s Messiah will round off the orchestra’s 70th anniversary year and most varied season yet.
The TSO is delighted to welcome artists who will be appearing with the orchestra for the first time in 2018. Among them are pianists Nelson Freire, Simon Trpčeski and Jayson Gillham; violinist Veronika Eberle; mandolin player Avi Avital; and conductors Sir Andrew Davis and up-and-coming American maestra, Karina Canellakis. British pianist Steven Osborne, also making his TSO debut, will be appearing in recital, performing works by Debussy and Prokofiev.
Music inspired by Shakespeare will be featured throughout the 2018 season. In addition to Roméo et Juliette, next year’s season will include Romeo Retold – a concert of Romeo-inspired works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Bernstein – together with works by Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Nikolai and others scattered throughout the year in various concerts. Romeo Retold, in Hobart’s Federation Concert Hall on 10 October, will be a special event to mark the orchestra’s 70th anniversary.
The TSO gave its first-ever concert on 25 May 1948 and two works from that concert – Grieg’s Piano Concerto and Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 – will be performed in 2018. Next year’s season will also feature a specially commissioned 70th-anniversary work by Australian composer Melody Eötvös.
The TSO’s 2018 Season is now on general sale.
