Nelson Bay River
Tarkine National Coalition has received written notice that Circular Head Council has “deleted” a permit condition aimed at providing protecting watercourses on the Nelson Bay River proposed mine site.
The deleted condition stated ‘Apart from the creation of the site’s access, no building works or vegetation clearing shall occur within 30 metres of a watercourse’.
“Here we have a council who is hell bent on doing whatever it takes to get a mine up in the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, and the environment be damned”, said Tarkine National Coalition Campaign Coordinator, Scott Jordan.
“The Nelson Bay River and it’s catchment creeks provide drinking water to local wildlife, including threatened species like the Tasmanian devil and Spotted tailed quoll. It also discharges just 5 km downstream into the shack community of Nelson Bay, a popular fishing and crayfishing location”.
“It appears the rules don’t apply if you are a mining company. Before they’ve even commenced operations Shree Minerals is calling the shots and dictating the rules”.
The Nelson Bay River proposed mine sits within the area the Australian Heritage Council recommended as a 439,000 hectare Tarkine National Heritage Listing.

Again this just beggars belief. How can a council just ‘delete’ a permit clause?
What is the point of having a swollen public service, supposedly there to create legislation to protect the environment and community from substandard practice, if a council can just decide willy-nilly to remove quite a significant protection clause from a permit.
What the f*#k is going on in this world.
I suppose it would be expecting to much to assume there was a pitch-fork wielding rabble on the steps of council chambers to demand a reason and to have the clause re-enstated.
Of course not. All at home watching Celebrity MKR Chef or something or other while it all slips under their noses.
Honestly it gets harder and harder not to despair and give up!
Sue, Circular Head already boasts the most polluted rivers in the state, the Duck and the Montagu rivers. Ironically, a previous mayor (of another municipality) has also declared the Circular Head area as “pristine” farming land when spruiking the new AgriTas development! So with the documented industrial pollution on rivers and also farmland generating this sort of praise, there is no surprise at the Circular Head Councils’ lack of understanding about what a healthy river is. What I actually find surprising however, is that there appears to be no regard, or even protest, for or from those who have shacks at the Nelson Bay! Is this due to the endemic local response of silence and intimidation when the big boys are calling the shots? I still shudder at the photos of the Luina river pollution 6km long - the Shree Minerals proposed mine is only 5km from the shack community - certainly within striking distance of permanently polluting this rather nice holiday area. Disgraceful decision. So much for the “edge of the world” boasting “a breath of fresh air” from the cleanest air and rain in the world. Totally wasted on this Council who treat with such contempt the unbelievable treasure they are meant to be stewards of.
Mining companies…The new Gunns???
Thanks Nicole. I thoroughly agree, but as previously alluded I fear the real tragedy is that we are failing ourselves by, 1 - being careless about who we elect into positions of control and 2 - not calling them to account. Its like they are asleep at the wheel without someone beside them to shout at them to wake up.
While we are kept busy watching insignificant dross on TV and chasing crap we don’t need, they make decisions that suit themselves more than us.
In other words, they make money out of permit applications, so what better way to keep them rolling in than by displaying a reputation of compliance.
If no one calls them to heel, why would they not continue. Our naivety that they will naturally want to serve us out of the goodness of their hearts is akin to the naivety that men of the church are holier than thou.
By we, I don’t mean us, but the general public who largely remain silent. As the voices of dissent become less and less, they are much easier to marginalise as ‘perpetual whingers’. For reasons often understandable but bad all the same, many have become lazy, bored, disinterested and preoccupied.
How does that saying go about evil triumphing when good people do nothing?
Resource extractors are renowned for their utter ruthlessness and rapacity in getting what they want for as little as possible.
The awe-struck CHC cargo cult clearly thinks they will likewise strike it rich with the same attitude.

Circular Head Council is the cultural heart of Taswegian redneckism.
It’s ancestors were involved with the infamous Cape Grim heritage and the Robber Barron mindset never the 19th Century.
To this parochial council, even the rest of Tasmania east of Wivenhoe are outsiders.
