Forest Peace Process Failures - The Tasmanian Forest Agreement 2012 and its Associated Legislative Bill, the Tasmanian Forests Agreement Bill 2012 (No. 30)
Dear Honourable Messrs and Mesdames,
We call upon the Tasmanian Legislative Council to strongly reject both the Tasmanian Forest Agreement 2012 and its associated legislative Bill, the Tasmanian Forests Agreement Bill 2012 (No. 30). This briefing discusses the reasons for our position. It is our hope that you will find commonality and agreement with our position over a sufficient number of issues to come to the conclusion that this Bill should not be passed in its current form.
This briefing is intended to provide information to assist with decision-making over the outcome of the forest peace process, its Tasmanian Forest Agreement 2012 and its associated legislative Bill, the Tasmanian Forests Agreement Bill 2012 (No. 30), which had its Second Reading on the 22 November 2012 and comes before the Legislative Council in a few days.
The Environment Association (TEA) Inc favours complete cessation of the current unacceptable process. We do not support it.
If enacted the current Bill is likely to have dire unsustainable consequences for Tasmania and its biodiversity as well as for Tasmanian society and its economy. We do not consider it will deliver peace either for its people or its forests. It is not a viable way forward.
This paper provides information about current and proposed conservation of Tasmania’s forests, comments on important carbon issues, various industry issues and desirable legislative reforms as well as providing the reasons for our lack of support for the process itself.
Importantly we see using forests to raise funds from carbon trading to be more viable than the current unsustainable industry. This view of TEA’s was recently also put forward and quantified by The Australia Institute.
Some may propose amending the Bill but there is the underlying agreement, the Tasmanian Forest Agreement 2012, in which we find little to support either.
