A new report for the World Bank by leading climate scientists at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, concluding that the planet is on track to heat by a devastating 4C by 2100 if governments fail to change direction, should be a clear message to Julia Gillard, Martin Ferguson and Tony Abbott that the dash for coal and gas must end.

“The World Bank paints a very grim picture of a very different and much less liveable world if we keep going in this direction, so we have to heed their message and turn away from polluting coal and gas and towards clean, renewable energy,” Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

“The dash for coal and gas that Julia Gillard, Martin Ferguson and Tony Abbott all want to facilitate is recklessly jeopardising the climate that has allowed human civilisation to flourish and that the World Bank says won’t survive 4C warming.

“This comes on top of the International Energy Agency last week saying that two thirds of the world’s coal has to stay in the ground if we are to stay below 2C warming.

“This attitude that we can keep burning more and more coal and gas, and shipping more overseas for others to burn, while claiming to understand and respect climate science would be laughable if it weren’t so serious.

“Only last week, the government officially recognised that methane is more dangerous for the climate than it had previously said, but decided nevertheless not to change the way it accounts for it for another five years.

“Sweeping scientific warnings under the carpet like this is what will lead to a much hotter planet which will be much harder for all of us to live on.”
