Recorded phone conversations reveal alleged senior figures in the Melbourne Mafia planned to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Victorian Liberal Party after dining with state opposition leader Matthew Guy.

On one recording, obtained by Fairfax and Four Corners, party official Barry Macmillan said Tony Madafferi and three members of his family “want to give Matthew a substantial donation towards next year” at a second dinner Macmillan was arranging. Macmillan explained the need to “be extremely careful” to avoid the attention of the Australian Electoral Commission, saying he had “had to speak” to Victorian Liberal Party president Michael Kroger to ensure Madafferi and his family members did not “walk in with 50 grand each, hypothetically, in a paper bag and hand it across to Matthew”.
