A group of Labor MPs has confronted shadow immigration minister Shayne Neumann over his silence on conditions in Australia’s offshore detention centres.

Labor senators Jenny McAllister, Murray Watt and Sue Lines joined member for Scullin, Andrew Giles, in a private meeting in Neumann’s office, where they said Neumann’s failure to make any substantive comment on the death of 31-year-old Iranian asylum seeker Hamed Shamshiripour had left MPs “upset and concerned”. An MP who attended the meeting told Fairfax Shamshiripour’s death was a catalyst for wider “concerns that a larger number of MPs have about the ongoing situation on Manus and Nauru” and Labor’s failure to hold immigration minister Peter Dutton to account.
