Speak Up! Stay ChatTY is this week commencing the second Tour de Tig (TDT2). Speak Up! Stay Founder Mitch McPherson and six mates are running from Burnie to Hobart from the 21st to the 25th of March.
The inaugural Tour de Tig was held in 2014 and raised just over $25,000. Mitch said he was pleased to present TDT2, named after his brother.
“Ty’s nickname was Tig and after he took his own life one of the first initiatives we did was to get on the road with Tour de Tig to raise money and awareness of mental health issues.” Mitch said.
The aim of TDT2 is to not only take on the huge physical challenge of running 360km on foot, but to create conversation around the state about the mental health issues that so many people in our community face.
Stay ChatTY’s message is to break down the stigma that surrounds mental health issues by telling as many people as possible that it is ok to not be ok.
Stay ChatTY are also encouraging members of the community to be involved, with more than 20 people from the community committing to a physical challenge over this week to help raise funds and awareness for such an important issue.
A number of community events will be held across the state over the week with the aim of spreading the message as far and wide as possible.
“Breaking down the stigma around mental health is imperative. So many people suffer alone and don’t open up about the tough times they are experiencing. Through TDT2 we hope we will encourage many more people in Tasmania to know that it is ok to not be ok,” Mitch said.
“It is going to be a physical battle for us 7 runners, but we all know that there are many others out there fighting their own battle. And we hope what we are doing inspires them to fight through the tough times.”
