SHOOTERS FISHERS & FARMERS PARTY, TAS. CALL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ALL ENCOMPASSING SALMON DISEASE RISK MITIGATION PROGRAMME FOR MACQUARIE HARBOUR.
Ken Orr, Vice Chair of Shooters Fishers & Farmers Party, asks when will the Government, its Minister and the EPA step up and order the immediate destocking of Tassal’s Macquarie Harbour leases.
Following significant salmon mortalities in the harbour due to disease and oxygen starvation; it appears there is little, or no intervention from the EPA or Minister Rockcliff.
There is no “disease risk mitigation plan” for the harbour as a whole, so is the Government treating it, as out of sight out of mind.
If 50,000 chickens, died on a land based farm, through disease or overcrowding, would the Government stand by without taking significant and immediate remedial action in Tasmania’s best biosecurity interests.
Would they fine or prosecute the grower for poor farming practices ?
Orr continued to say “Why is our aquatic environment treated differently, and the grower involved allowed to dictate all the farming and remedial terms, irrespective of significant disease outbreaks and fish mortalities”.
We need an immediate, and dramatic response from the EPA, to protect other fish farmers and their livestock, not to mention the whole aquatic health of Macquarie Harbour.
We need immediate de stocking of Tassal’s overstocked leases, and an overarching “disease risk mitigation plan” to protect Macquarie Harbour in its entirety and its wild fish health.
