 Councils overwhelmingly vote down TasWater takeover
 Humiliating loss for the Treasurer
 Position as Local Government Minister untenable

Treasurer Peter Gutwein must listen to the clear message from local government at today’s special LGAT meeting in Launceston.

Shadow Minister for Local Government Madeleine Ogilvie said councils had overwhelmingly voted to reject the Government’s takeover of TasWater.

“Peter Gutwein’s attempt to convince local government has failed,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“The message to the Treasurer from Tasmania’s councils is loud and clear.

“They don’t support his hostile takeover of TasWater and don’t believe his claims.

“It’s a humiliating loss for a senior member of the Hodgman Government.

“The Treasurer has provided no modelling to back up his claim that the schedule of work can be completed in five years.

“And there’s no modelling in terms of what it will cost Tasmanians in terms of interest on debt.

“How can Peter Gutwein continue with his takeover plan with almost every council across the state against him?

“It also puts a dark cloud over his future as the Minister for Local Government.”
