•      Government lifts sensible ideas straight from Labor’s policy
•      Liberals have lacked leadership on salmon
•      Labor will always support a sustainable, well-regulated salmon industry

Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Shane Broad has welcomed the Government’s adoption of many of Labor’s practical suggestions when it comes to the salmon industry.

“Labor will always support a sustainable, well-regulated salmon industry,” Dr Broad said.

“Labor will study the Government’s Industry Growth Plan closely but it appears the Minister has lifted many of Labor’s policy positions and adopted them as Government policy,” Dr Broad said.

“We announced in February this year a sensible policy developed in consultation with industry to strengthen regulation in the salmon industry.

“Labor proposed increasing the resources of the EPA, use of real time monitoring, improved biosecurity planning, adjusting the rules around Finfish licences and reviewing stocking densities.

“Many of Labor’s sensible proposals are reflected in the Growth Plan released by the Government today.

“Unfortunately up until this point, there’s been a distinct lack of leadership from the Liberals which has led to an erosion of community confidence in the industry.

“Labor is a strong supporter of the salmon industry and the crucial jobs it provides, especially in regional Tasmania.

“But we know in order for the industry to sustainably grow we need to get the balance right, we need to make sure there is confidence in how decisions are made and there needs to be strong regulation.”
