The Greens welcome the Prime Minister’s focus on our region and clear commitment to multilateralism in today’s National Security speech, but warned that global warming cannot be an afterthought.

“Experts from the Pentagon have long agreed that global warming is central to national security in the 21st century, and yet it seemed to be no more than an afterthought in the Prime Minister’s speech,” said Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne.

“The Greens welcome the focus of our Defence Forces in our region, and we want to see our troops brought home from Afghanistan as swiftly and safely as possible. Our effort in Afghanistan should be civil and humanitarian, not military.

“The Prime Minister’s clear commitment to multilateralism and rules-based order is very welcome. We need to see respect for human rights also central in our national security posture.

“With our elevation to the UN Security Council, it is more important than ever that Australia charts an independent foreign policy. The Greens remain concerned that hosting more US bases on our soil does not send that message to our region.”
