A vigil for Hamed Shamshiripour, whose life was cruelly cut short on Manus Island, was held in Sydney at 12.30pm today 8/8/17

Prof Newhouse spoke today at a rally for refugee Hamed who was found dead on Manus.

Over the last 5 years I have had to deal with the intense grief of more than ten families who have lost a loved one held in immigration detention centres run by the Australian Government.

Peter Dutton and Malcolm Turnbull don’t have to try to choke back their tears as they deliver the bad news to grieving parents. If they did they might have an understanding that their cruelty to refugees has very real and deadly consequences.

Hamed’s family tell me that he grew up a perfectly normal boy in Iran. Last Monday, they awoke to images of him hanging off a tree.

Hamed’s declining health had been monitored by Border force and was known to Comcover – I can understand why people are demanding that they be held responsible for the inaction that led his death.

Our leaders are implicated in Hamed’s death. Government officials knew about his fragile condition and they left him there to die.

But there is a paper trail in this case that must be followed and we will not rest until heads roll. The family want justice and they want those responsible to be held accountable even if that goes all the way to the PM and the Minister for Immigration.

The public needs to know what is going on in our name, on our behalf, by our government.

Hamid’s family are demanding:1. An assurance that Hamed’s body is being kept in mortuary like conditions

2. An urgent autopsy examination of Hamed’s body by a forensic pathologist

3. An inquest into his death in Australia; and

4. The repatriation the Hamed’s body to Iran after the autopsy
