The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, has discussed the Tasmanian Labor Party’s policy to remove poker machines from hotels and clubs by 2023.
“I welcome Labor’s commitment today that, if elected, they will remove all poker machines from hotels and clubs by 2023,” Mr Wilkie said.
“This announcement today is a win for those who have been tirelessly campaigning for meaningful poker machine reform.
“We know that poker machines cause or at least add to many social ills including crime, domestic violence, suicide and childhood poverty. That’s why I recently launched the Pokies are the Problem campaign to encourage the Opposition to come up with a decent policy on poker machines, and I’m glad that this has finally happened.
“I now call on the Liberals to step up and match Labor’s commitment because completely removing poker machines from hotels and clubs is the only sensible policy and the only policy that will seriously reduce harm. This is what the community has overwhelmingly been saying they want and any party who doesn’t listen will be punished by the voters in March.”
