The Playhouse Theatre is the place to be for some old-fashioned rollicking Aussie fun next month, as the Hobart Repertory Theatre Society presents its next show On Our Selection.

Portraying the misadventures of those iconic Australian characters Dad and Dave, the play boasts a stellar cast of local talent and features a toe-tapping three-piece bush band.

Rep President Liz Lewinski said the company was extremely pleased with the line-up for this classic Australian comedy.

“We were quite overwhelmed with the casting for this show – pretty much the cream of local theatre will be on stage,” Liz says.

“Distinguished Hobart actor and director Robert Jarman stars as Dad, alongside equally well-loved Hobart actors Andrew Casey as Dave and Noreen Le Mottee as Mother.

”Also joining the talented line-up are Ivano Del Pio, Nicole Farrow, Damian Brockie, Trevor Gallagher, Jon Lenthall, Steven Jones, Kate Choraziak, Luke Visentin, Deidree McMaster and Tara Carroll.”

Directing the show is Rod Anderson, who has had an extensive career as both a performer and director stretching many years from musical theatre to TV.

He has directed for Melbourne Opera Company, Victorian State Opera, Melbourne Theatre Company and Playbox (now Malthouse) to name a few.

As a playwright, his 2012 production The Girls From Oz enjoyed a successful Australian tour, while his 2014 production, Blitz! has just toured various Tasmanian venues ahead of national tour in 2016. Rod’s most recent production A Woman on the Edge played a sell-out season during the 2015 Tasmanian International Arts Festival.

On Our Selection is at The Playhouse Theatre, 106 Bathurst Street Hobart, from 14 to 29 August 2015. Performances are 8:00 pm Wednesday to Saturday, with matinees on Sunday 23 August at 3:00 pm and Saturday 29 August at 2:00 pm. Book at Centertainment on 6234 5998 or

Background information ...

On Our Selection is a melodrama, in all the positive and original meanings of that term. The baddies are bad and the goodies are golden! From 1912 to the 1950s there was always a production of the play being performed somewhere in Australia. The original production was the longest running play in the country’s history and many people claim it has still never been topped. There have been three major movies about Dad and Dave, a radio serial that ran for decades and several television adaptations. Whether it was Leo McKern or Gordon Chater as Dad, Geoffrey Rush or Garry McDonald as Dave, Joan Sutherland as Mother and Mel Gibson as Sandy, actors have fought to play the iconic characters in this quintessentially Australian story.

Dad Rudd and Mother are struggling to raise their brood – dopey Dave, angelic Kate, stammering Joe and gawky Sarah – in the midst of drought in the back blocks of Queensland. Their selection (a piece of land claimed from a squatter and protected by law in attempt to get poorer people onto the land) is under attack by the ruthless squatter and his wastrel son.

On Our Selection will feature a three-piece bush band. So come along ready to sing a few old favourites like On the Road to Gundagai, I’m Going Back Again to Yarrawonga, Click Go the Shears, K-K-Katie and many other fabulous old ballads.
