FIRST AUSTRALIAN PERFORMANCE BY NORWEGIAN ICONOCLASTS ...
ANNOUNCED EXCLUSIVELY FOR DARK MOFO 2017
Dark Mofo, Mona’s winter festival in Tasmania, Australia, delves into centuries-old winter solstice rituals, exploring the links between ancient and contemporary mythologies, humans and nature, religious and secular traditions, darkness and light, and birth, death and renewal.
Fittingly, the first announcement for this winter’s Dark Mofo is the exclusive Australian performance of ULVER (Norway), at the Odeon Theatre in Hobart, Tasmania, on Thursday 15 June 2017.
Fronted by vocalist and primus motor Kristoffer Rygg, Ulver’s early works established their influence as pioneers of Norwegian black metal, and their stylistic unpredictability since has achieved sales of more than half a million records, received multiple nominations for the Spellemannsprisen (Norwegian Grammy Awards), and won Album of the Year at the Oslo Awards.
Those familiar with this stubborn pack of wolves from the land of the midnight sun will not be surprised that they are again shifting shape, with the April release of their new album The Assassination of Julius Caesar.
The band’s thirteenth studio album comes after the critical success of last year’s hybrid ATGCLVLSSCAP (released on House of Mythology). Ulver’s unruly play with myth, history and pop culture has never been more manifest than now with this new release, as they weave together mythology both ancient and contemporary, drawing lines between the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Greek goddess Artemis (Roman: Diana) and the hunter Actaeon, from the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II, to the headquarters of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan.
Since Ulver was formed a quarter of a century ago, their musical odyssey has taken them around the world in many guises. Now they commune with us in the Australian night, for Dark Mofo 2017.
Ulver vocalist Kristoffer Rygg said: “Dark Mofo is one strange beast of a festival, and they have really pulled out all the big guns to make it possible to drag a pack of Vikings quite literally to the other side of the world in June.
“We have heard exceptional tales about this midwinter celebration. Considering the overall aesthetic of the festival and the type of art and acts it has featured before, this will be a trip extraordinaire and no doubt a once in a lifetime experience for Ulver.”
Dark Mofo is a project of Mona, supported by the State Government through Events Tasmania.
