Beastly, from Garry Stannus:
I did this very evening see a nasty monster nearing me with arms outreaching red and mean a smoke explosion creeping:  creeping arms spreading over my town tonight while we sleep while some cough and wheeze and A and E is there on the hill.  Launceston bei nacht 2/5/2010 Tis burn off season and thru the house, not a creature is breathing, not even a mouse.

And,

Dear Premier and Ministers,

State’s pollution today is already elevated in all population centres (see Environment monitoring data in attachment)and yet 13 FPA burns are planned for today with 10 already lit, most in the NE(See FPA burns in attachment) with N/NE winds blowing toward Launceston.

Call for immediate moratorium on all high and low intensity burns whilst EPA is investigating recent forestry logging rubbish smoke pollution and independent non forestry air pollution authority with health veto set up.

Yours sincerely

Data shows excedence in Ulverstone for 3/5/10 with elevations statewide and strong intermittent smoke smell.

And,

Dear Premier and Ministers,

John Innis, Environment, advises there are 65 TFS permits active today statewide. TFS takes no account of air quality when they issue permits.
Conditions are wet for the week and air quality is already poor statewide with an excedence in Ulverstone EPA data yesterday. No TFS burn loads are given but burns are contributing to statewide smoke. This is an unusually high number of permits, permits are usually in summer, and permits are exempt from the EMPCA. This is very concerning for the health of Tasmanians.
Urgent independent pollution authority with health veto and no EMPCA exemptions required.

Wednesday:

4/5/10 PM 10 Excedence in Ulverstone EPA data yesterday(see Attachment, below)

Data shows second day of excedence in Ulverstone from 3-4/5/10 with elevations statewide and strong intermittent smoke smell.
Still 5 FPA logging burns and 65 TFS permits active

Quality Air Tasmania calls on Government and Health Director for moratorium on all FPA and TFS permit burns and for non forestry air pollution authority with health veto.

Yours sincerely
