Graeme Evans, Sorell Deputy Mayor, in the Mercury’s Letters column today. It’s at odds with Southern Water’s explanation of how e.coli appeared in Sorell’s water supply. My money’s on a botch-up of chlorination levels in the north and south. Can someone ask Southern Water to supply daily chlorination records and logs of pipe work done in the areas affected by e.coli.
WATER STUFF UP
I assure Sorell and Midway Point residents that when Sorell Council handed the water supply to Southern Water, it was a meticulously maintained, fully-enclosed system.
All reservoirs are roofed and water of excellent quality was supplied by Hobart Water. Capital works upgrades were done when needed.
Problems during my over 10 years on the council were minor and very rare. Midway Point and Sorell residents paid for the system and maintenance through use of water meters and two-part pricing.
Part of the system, the Water Point, where trucks fill up to supply water to outlying areas, won an award for its innovative design.
Developers of subdivisions paid a charge for each block to assist with system upgrades, and over $500,000, earmarked for a new reservoir for Sorell, was handed to Southern Water.
The only reasons we know of that could cause water quality problems are either a break in a pipe, where the pipes are not flushed properly after being rejoined, or that chlorine levels in the reservoirs and pipes are not properly maintained.
