Uni students rally today after street attacks 4

UNIVERSITY Tasmania students will hold a rally (today) to protest a spate of nighttime street attacks in Sandy Bay.

There has been at least two violent incidents involving students in the last week near the university campus, although some students say another two incidents have gone unreported to police.

A 20-year-old international student was attacked and robbed in View Street, Sandy Bay on Saturday night.

Another student was attacked by six men armed with bottles after leaving the law school on May 8.

Tasmania University Union vice president Saleh Bintalib said many students were scared to walk the streets after dark.

“We are holding this rally to raise awareness on this issue that it doesn’t only affect a minority group – it affects every single UTas student and that if anything happens we want them to report it to the police.

“We have the police coming to tell students don’t be afraid, we’re here to look after you and to make reports.
