Most people don’t realise that even 60% of registered democrats in the US are fully against firearm restrictions. It was the Obama admin that re-legalised the bump stocks that were used in the deadly Vegas massacre.
It is very hard for outsiders to grasp an understanding of US culture. The vast majority of Americans would die protecting their constitution, and the reason they support the 2nd amendment so fiercely is that it’s existence guarantees the preservation of the human rights listed in their constitution, arguably the most important being the 1st amendment .. freedom of religion, speech, and the press.
The nation was founded on defeating a tyrannical government (the British) by means of an armed citizen rebellion so that the free peoples of the United states would never have to endure such tyranny again. The scholars and philosophers of the time understood this, and made the right to bear arms the second most important right, to protect all others.
One could ask, if the Jews in Germany were armed, would the holocaust have taken place?
If the civilians of Cambodia were armed, would millions of men, women and children not have perished under Pol Pot’s regime .. the millions of civilians who perished in the Soviet Union, or the millions who perished under Mao, or the millions of people today who live under complete tyranny in North Korea.
Massacres are terrible and tragic events, but they pale in comparison to the evil that mankind can unleash upon his fellow man on a scale that cannot be described as a mere tragedy.
The citizens of the United States will fight fiercely to preserve their freedom for themselves, and future generations.
JDN: Like so many Americans you are part of a dreamworld which imagines state agencies do not have a monopoly on the use of force.
What have you got to show for it as a cottage industry beside the Mafia, the KKK and a Vietnam-sized conflict by paranoiacs, criminals and general weirdos against the world? Occasionally the monopoly is enforced with a Kent State massacre when the local folks get out of line, before that the unemployed were on the receiving end if they annoyed the oligarchs and now mostly black civilians, randomly killed by the police, probably as some cultural right of passage. Where were your armed libertarians then and now?
The fat camouflage-garbed squirrel-hunting militia groups couldn’t organize a chook raffle if push came to shove on your imagined liberties. Like my dad said to my uncle about his insurance policy (“Just let’em come!”) in the closet against the Red peril.
“If they get past the US Army your ass is mud.”
In most civilized countries anyone so crazy and insecure that they need to pack a gun on a road trip or shopping at K-Mart would probably never even find a mate. Even in the US, where there is less freedom of choice, they often end up living with their mothers before they snap.
